Until just a few years ago, railway vehicles were built on the former grounds of the Bombardier factory in Vienna’s 21st district. Now, public housing has been created in the midst of a park landscape.
Complying with the guidelines for public housing, developed was a u-shaped block with recessed base. This results in large, partially covered outdoor areas, and a semi-open green inner courtyard as a site for communication.
Through the inclined, differentiated form, the building volume appears amazingly light and dynamic despite its dimensions. This effect is intensified by the linear staggering of the façade and the material change between white plaster and pea-green fiber-cement panels.
The natural lighting is a basic consideration of the concept. From this come the characteristic form of the sloped side wing and the glazed base with communal spaces: vertical cuts guide daylight deep into the body of the building. The spacious and light-flooded stairways with views that connect the stories are constructed as communication spaces for the residents.
The property’s outdoor area is designed, as a whole, as a large, common, park. The explicit coloring of the project allows the green to flow throughout the building.
