The Wellanschitz Winery in the Burgenland village of Neckenmarkt is among the first “new” wineries in Austria. As a cutting-edge construction, it did not turn the old building on its head (…); instead, the winery remained true to its tradition and, despite spatial restrictions, wagered on expansion and extension.
The cellar, which had once served as storage space for the wines, was reconstructed as a space for wine presentation and degustation. (…) The architecture is dunked in the same hue of red that adorns every Wellanschitz wine label. A new cellar for the wine production space was dug at the far end of the long, narrow Streckhof style lot typical in Burgenland. A simple, functional building was placed over this using steel-frame construction (…).
During the second phase of construction it was time to shake out the moldy original cellar. The architecture here, too, relies on several variations of light and concrete, birch plywood and wine red.
